My 2011 Leadville 100-mile Ultramarathon Training Plan

For what it is worth, I have revised my training plan for the Leadville 100 ultramarathon based on feedback and questions I have received over the past year or so from a previous post on this blog.  As I stated then, several friends had asked about how I trained for the race.  Thus, I have posted my training plan here if you care to take a look.

If you have any questions, then please post a comment or email me and I will continue to update the plan accordingly.  Best of luck to anyone taking on the challenge of running a 100-mile ultramarathon!

    1. It certainly does, Gancho. Many, if not most, of those hill workouts were with you :-)

  2. Thanks for posting the plan Phil, I am looking at making Leadville my first 100M. My main concern is that I want to do a 24 hour ultra race 3 weeks before. In your opinion would that be too close? At that point was your base 50-60/week? How long were your longest runs at that point?

    1. Hi Greg! I topped out at 80 miles 4 weeks before the race and started my taper the next/3rd week with a 25% reduction. Personally, I think a 24-hour ultra race in the 3rd week would definitely negatively impact your performance at Leadville. My longest runs during the 18-week training process were 50 milers. Thanks for asking!

  3. Phil,

Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. It is nice to have a reference. This will be my second leadville and plan on finishing this time
